Brandenburger Tor
Like every
medieval
town, Berlin had a couple of gates (in German: "Tor") through
which one formerly entered the town.
If
you look at any U-Bahn map you can find Kottbusser Tor, Oranienburger
Tor, Schlesisches Tor, Hallesches Tor, Frankfurter Tor.
They all are gone now, the only surviving gate being the one
to
the german county of Brandenburg. Ironically there's no underground
station called "Brandenburger Tor".
But
this will be changed.
There are plans for a new
U-Bahn connecting Brandenburger Tor
and Bundestag.
It
will be called U 55. Not
that there are over fifty underground lines in Berlin, that's just to
confuse the tourists. They have already started to dig the holes and
hope to be ready in 2010.
That's complete
nonsens, probably thought up by one overpaid spaced out
politician. If you walk slowly from Brandenburger Tor to Bundestag,
it's a quite romantic 6-minute-walk. That surely needs a new
underground line.
Nowadays
of course the gate isn't a city gate anymore, it's a tourist attraction
right in the center of Berlin.
