Holocaust Memorial
This is supposed to be a memorial to
the murdered Jews of Europe.
Although the intentions were good, it just doesn't
work out. You hardly meet people standing there, thinking about Jews.
According to architect Peter Eisenman's
project text, the more than 2000 concrete slabs were designed to
produce an uneasy, confusing atmosphere, but this just was wishful
thinking.
To a good deal the place is used by the tourists to
play hide and
seek. You can see a lot of laughing people having fun.
A nice historical touch is that the monument's
anti-graffiti substance Protectosil is produced by
the german company Degussa. A subsidiary company of
Degussa called Degesch did
manufacture Zyklon B, the
poison used in the gas chambers.
As the official name of the monument is "Memorial
to the murdered Jews of Europe" one also might want to find memorials
for the as well murdered Roma and Sinti, Jehovah's Witnesses,
homosexuals, Communists, political prisoners and mentally or bodily
handicapped persons.
Well, good luck...
