Niederkirchner
Straße
is one of the four places in Berlin where there still are large parts
of the wall, the other three being Bernauer Str., Eastside
Gallery and Mauerpark.
In Niederkirchner Str. you find the most visited part of the Berlin
wall. That's because it's pretty central and all sightseeing busses go
here.
The wall is not the original GDR version as it was from 1961
to 1989. If you are looking for that, you better go to Bernauer Straße.
The wall in Niederkirchner Straße has been heavily
damaged. Because
for a period of ten
years folks had arrived with chisels all over Berlin and
chipped out private souvenirs. So the wall now has a
lot
of holes which of course aren't pre-1989.
In the Nazi era the street was called Prinz-Albrecht-Straße
housing the headquarters of the Gestapo and the SS.
