Mauerpark

As the pic shows, there's not much going on in Mauerpark on a frosty Wednesday morning in February. This changes completely on Sundays because of the "Flohmarkt" (flea market).
The Mauerpark market is a newcomer to Berlin’s flea markets. It was established in 2004 and highly welcomed by the folks in the district of Prenzlauer Berg. Now they also could get rid of their unwanted stuff.

In summer of course, the park is as crowded as any other Berlin park. Mostly young folks have their fun with soccer, frisbee, music and whatever. On hot summer nights it can be especially busy with spontaneous parties and music  - not always to the taste of the residents in the surrounding buildings.

In Mauerpark – translating into Wall Park – you find a speciality of the Berlin wall, a so called „Hinterlandmauer“. On various places East Berlin not only had one wall but two. The outer real one and a slighty lower and more cheaply built inner wall to keep the people from reaching the real thing. Now the wall in Mauerpark officially is open to grafitti artists.

Each year on April 30 there’s a huge party with bonfires and on New Years Eve you can feel a touch of World War 2 with grand fireworks taking off all around you.

How to get there:
Take U2 and get out at Eberswalder Str. From there it's a nice five minute walk to the park.
