Lakes in Berlin

Berlin is full of lakes (in German it's called "See"), as you can see on the map. Each dot is representing some kind of lake - big, small, dirty, clean, good for a swim, good for walking around.

We visited all the lakes, took pics and make it easy for you to decide where to go.

Simply watch out for our system of green, yellow and red dots:

"Off with your clothes and jump right in"
"Nice surroundings, but take your bath elsewhere"
"Don't waste your time"

Arkenberger See

This lake is a desaster. It's one big rubbish-heap. And on the northern beach there is an actual refuse pit, which you can smell heavily if the wind is right.

Baggersee

The lake in the district of Biesdorf could be a very nice lake. Lots of meadows, lonely creeks, a little village.

But it always is crowded...

Butzer See

Clean water, large meadows, hardly litter and very seldom a dog. What do you want more? Palm trees maybe. Well, you can't have everything, can you?

Der Faule See

"The lazy lake" - as the name translates into english - is a national preserved area. Swimming is prohibited.
>>> more

  Dianasee

It's not really a public lake. You can't walk around it, just a few meters into the woods. There you can sit on a park bench or feed the fish.

  Elsensee

The clean little lake is a national preserved area. Swimming or sitting on the beach is prohibited.
>>> more

  Fennpfuhl

No need to go there just for the lake. It's ok if your hotel is nearby, but its not a great tourist attraction. Swimming is prohibited.

Flughafensee

It's located right beneath Tegel Airport and you can watch the planes quite closely.
The water is clean, the sand smooth and there are four beaches, the last of them occupied mostly by the weirdos, the beer-can-department and dogs.

  Griebnitzsee

The lake is quite busy. Ship after ship and sometimes you have to swim through a lot of waves.
>>> more

  Grimnitzsee

Here you can walk your dog or sit on a bench and look at the lake.
>>> more

  Groß-Glienicker See

That's probably the cleanest lake you can find in Berlin. Absolutely clear water, large meadows and no litter at all.
>>> more

  Grunewaldsee

The lake is completely occupied by dogs. If you like barking this place is heaven for you. The noise is unbelievable.

Habermannsee

Not overcrowded, clean water and hardly litter. Great for taking a swim.
>>> more

  Halensee

The district of Halensee is named after the lake. Although the lake's not that big, it's the most frequented in Berlin's inner city. And you mainly meet nudists.

  Hermsdorfer See

Quite ok to have a romantic evening, but no good for swimming in. Both ground and water are quite muddy.
>>> more

  Herthasee

A little and romantic lake in the district of Grunewald. You can sit beneath the trees and hang on to your dreams.
>>> more

  Hubertussee

Also a little and romantic lake in Grunewald where you can sit beneath the trees too and hang on to your dreams.

  Hundekehlesee

And again a little and romantic lake in Grunewald where you can sit beneath the trees and...

  Karpfenteich

A nice little lake in the Treptow park to have a rest.
>>> more

  Koenigssee

A very hidden lake in the Grunewald district without paths to walk along and without beaches of any kind.
>>> more

  Lietzensee

A nice lake in the posh district of Charlottenburg. Not a trace of litter and everything looks very well cared for. People don't swim in the lake, they just stroll along the embankment.
>>> more

  Malchower See

Although the lake is quite clean and romantic, you hardly see someone swimming. Probably because all the folks are busy caring for the embankment and surrounding meadows.
>>> more

  Müggelsee

Berlin's biggest lake, about 4 kilometers long and simply fantastic for swimming and sailing.
>>> more

  Neuer See

They better should have christened this lake in honor of guitar legend Muddy Waters...
>>> more

  Obersee

Here you can play with your RC model boat or let your feet hang into the water. Swimming is prohibited.
>>> more

  Peetzsee

A big and very clean lake. It's located 30 minutes by bike east of Berlin's suburb of Erkner.
>>> more

  Teufelssee

A paradise for nudists. The lake is located deep inside the Grunewald forest.
>>> more

  Wannsee

A good thing about Wannsee is ferry #10 which takes you from Wannse to the district of Kladow. It's a nice 30 minute trip.
>>> more

  Weißer See

A nice and romantic little lake, good for a walk but also for having a swim. But don't go here if you like it quiet.
>>> more

  Ziegeleisee

This lake is indeed very nice, but you can't swim there just like that, it's a public open air swimming pool. In 2003 the admission fee was 4 Euros, and it's not likely to be cheaper now.
