Alexanderplatz
The one place in Berlin you never can miss because
of the TV-tower with its characteristic glass globe on top. It's a
restaurant and you can see it from miles away.
The northern part of the place is a pretty
ugly affair with lots of concrete and hardly a tree in sight. South of
the TV-tower it's quite ok. There's a little park and the
Neptune-fountain.
The
World Time Clock, a continually rotating installation that shows the
time throughout the globe, used to be - and sometimes still is - a
favourite meeting point for East-Berlin's lovers.
Alexanderplatz has
the biggest underground railway station of
Berlin and is served by three underground lines.
Some buildings will be redesigned and new structures
are being built on the square's south-eastern side. The Alexa shopping mall,
with
approximately 180 stores opened in 2007 and a
large Saturn electronic store is currently being built to open
in 2008.
Next
to the place there is the "Rotes Rathaus" (Red City Hall), the
traditional seat of East Berlin's parliament.
