This is the district of Mahlsdorf
In 1944 the 16-year old
Lothar Berfelde killed his father and was sentenced to 4 years in
prison. After that he took to wearing women’s clothes and
changed his name to „Charlotte von Mahlsdorf“.
After collecting old furniture for a couple of years, in 1960 Charlotte
founded the Mahlsdorf museum. After a neo-nazi attack in 1992 she
emigrated to Sweden and died of a heart attack in 2002 while visiting
Berlin.
The play after her autobiography „I am my own wife“
premiered Off-Broadway in 2003 at Playwrights Horizons and opened on
Broadway later that year.
